Michelle Sorensen, Psychological Associate
Michelle Sorensen provides psychological services using a cognitive behavioural approach to therapy. She helps clients with a broad range of presenting issues, including anxiety, depression, anger, interpersonal issues, low self-esteem, trauma, stress management, and workplace concerns. Michelle combines her background in health care with her knowledge of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help individuals coping with chronic illness (such as diabetes and heart disease) or a new diagnosis.
CBT requires the therapist and client to examine the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Michelle uses a collaborative approach to develop an individualized treatment plan to help each client explore the beliefs, assumptions and automatic thoughts driving his or her emotions. CBT can be used for both short- and long-term therapy, and the number of sessions varies, depending on the problems and goals of the client.
Michelle has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology from Queen’s University and her Master in Education in Counselling Psychology from OISE at the University of Toronto. Michelle is registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario as a Clinical Psychological Associate and focuses primarily on assessment and intervention with adults (aged 18 and over). She also maintains memberships with the Ontario Psychological Association and the Ottawa Academy of Psychologists.
Her clinical experience includes working at Kids Help Phone, an Employee Assistance Program, and the Heart Institute Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre (researching change in health behaviours). Michelle began a private practice in Toronto in 2002 and moved to Ottawa and joined Queensview Professional Services in 2007.
