Professional Biography
Since 2003, Joanne has worked at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, on the Children's Mental Health Inpatient Unit and on the Palliative Care Team. In both those settings, Joanne's work focussed on supporting the parents of patients, with issues ranging from depression, anxiety, physical illness, interpersonal problems to grief and bereavement. While on the Palliative Care team, Joanne outreached to Roger's House Hospice, where she coordinated and facilitated support groups both for parents whose children had life-limiting illnesses and the Grief Support Group for bereaved parents. She also provided individual grief counseling and continues to have a special interest in supporting bereaved individuals. Prior to joining CHEO, Joanne worked as a counsellor in a women's shelter in Toronto and for the Children's Aid Society of Toronto, where she supported women and children who had experienced trauma and abuse.
Joanne established a part-time private practice at QPS in 2009. She provides therapy mainly to adults. Joanne's approach to supporting clients is collaborative, strengths-based and non-judgmental. Her therapeutic orientation includes cognitive-behavioral strategies, which involve helping clients to explore the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behavior in order to develop a better understanding of their problems and learn how to create change in their lives. Joanne uses her clinical skills and experience, her knowledge of community resources and a warm and caring approach to support her clients in dealing effectively with the challenges they face.
